How To Stop the Incident of Suicides on Lagos Third Mainland Bridge

The cases of suicides and suicide attempt in Nigeria is becoming alarming, especially those reportedly taking place on the Lagos third mainland bridge. There's therefore the urgent need for the government to take measures to prevent such sad reoccurrence even as the
risk factors which include mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and substance abuse - including alcoholism and the use of benzodiazepines, are now on the increase in Nigeria.

Worthy of note is the fact that there are other  contributing factors like impulsive acts due to stress arising from financial difficulties, troubled  relationships, or bullying.

Again, those who have previously attempted suicide are at a higher risk for future attempts.

Therefore, the general Suicide prevention efforts should include limiting access to methods of suicide - such as firearms, drugs, and poisons; treating mental disorders and substance misuse; proper media reporting of suicide; and improving economic conditions.

However in Lagos State particularly, a tall wall should be built on both sides of the third mainland bridge that will make it difficult for anyone to easily jump across into the lagoon. Also, anyone climbing such tall walls can be easily seen and rescued. Tiny see-through holes can be built into the walls for tourists and others to appreciate the beauty of the lagoon.

Finally, I urge the government of Lagos State to set up an emergency response unit near the third mainland bridge because security of lives is one of the cardinal functions of government.
